A Quick Message From the Executive Director:
At the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum, we’re all about everyday folks because, truth be told, we–this institution and the stories we tell–wouldn’t be here without them. When you give to the Museum, whether it be $5, $50, or $500, you’re not just a drop in the bucket; you’re the bucket itself! More than 50% of our support comes from individuals like you who believe in what we do–whether you donate, throw a few bucks our way monthly, or snag some merch in our store, you’re the reason we’re not just surviving but thriving. That’s why it’s so important to think of us as you make plans to give this year.
I’ve had the privilege of steering this ship for five years now, and every year, when I think we’ve hit our limit, we surprise ourselves. As Appalachians, we’ve got that knack for doing a whole lot with a little.
In 2020, we rebuilt this Museum with a $12,500 grant and a wall-full of individual contributions. More than just brick and mortar, we doubled our storytelling capacity and exhibit space, adding more voices to the chorus of stories we tell. Meanwhile, we planned and later celebrated the Blair Centennial with a part-time director (yours truly) and a stellar core team of dedicated volunteers who supported the planning process for nearly 3 years. In 2022, we built the first-ever monuments along the Miners Marching Route in Marmet and Clothier, with plans to make a whole lot more. And just last month, we launched a new labor education project and officially became proud owners of the Cecil E. Roberts building—all thanks to the incredible support of folks who believe in our mission.
That's right, 100% people-powered donations made it possible to own our own space.
This history has fought a long time to be heard. It’s incredible to see just how far we’ve come and the community of support that surrounds us, from Matewan to L.A. This history has been embraced, shared, and pointed to from folks from all corners. And rightly so.
As our small team gears up for Giving Tuesday, we're not just asking for your support; we're inviting you to be part of the ongoing story of this Museum. Your contribution isn't just a donation; it's a vote for more stories, more exhibits, and more community impact. We hope you’ll join us.
Will you pitch in to help us reach our goal of raising $3,000 for the museum’s education programming into 2024?
Thanks for allowing us to do what we do!
In solidarity and gratitude for another incredible year,
Kenzie
